SPOTLIGHT ON STUDENTS

Sticker Shock

Sticker Shock involves placing stickers and bottle hangers on alcoholic beverages that might appeal to underage drinkers with a warning message about the penalties for providing alcohol to anyone under 21.  This activity is designed to help prevent people 21 and older from purchasing alcohol and providing it to underage individuals.  We have conducted this activity since 2016 and typically do so in the spring before prom and graduation season.

Rogers Wines & Spirits and Rogers Police Department joined together on May 22, 2024 to participate in this activity with two of our senior students, Paulina Phengmany and Lindsey Fuentes.

ISD 728 PREVENTION & SAFETY: RESOURCES for FAMILIES & PARENTS

Please visit THIS SITE which contains family and parent resources to support mental health, social and emotional learning (job preparedness skills), safety, alcohol and substance abuse and more. The information on this page will be updated regularly with new resources, community events relating to these issues and other important information relating to Prevention & Safety.

Sherburne County Substance Use Prevention Coalition

The SUP Coalition is a community-focused coalition comprised of individuals
that reside or work in Sherburne County and are committed to reducing
youth substance use through community collaboration.

Spring is an exciting time of year with prom, graduation, and many end-of-the-school-year celebrations!  With these events just around the corner, we would like to remind you of the important role you play in ensuring that your teen has a safe and memorable experience - without the use of alcohol or other impairing drugs.  Most teens are making the responsible decision to not drink alcohol.  Help the many teens who don't drink alcohol feel confident in their choice by supporting alcohol-free celebrations.

What can you do to help reduce underage alcohol use?

  • Talk with your teen about issues involving alcohol.  Though it may not seem like it, teens do hear your concerns.  Talk early and often about the risks and consequences of underage drinking.  Set clear rules against drinking and consistently enforce those rules.

  • Refuse to supply alcohol to underage youth.  Never buy alcohol for anyone under 21, or you could face up to one year in jail and/or a $3,000 fine.  Do not allow your teen to have parties with alcohol on your property, or you could be facing up to 90 days in jail and/or a $1,000 fine-whether you're present or not.

  • Provide safe alternatives.  Plan chaperoned alcohol-free parties for your teen and their friends.  When your child is invited to a party, let them know you're available to get them out of a situation where other teens are drinking or using drugs.  Creating a code word or phrase can make it easier for your child to ask for help.  Another option is to use a location app.  These apps can monitor your child's phone use, location, and more to help keep them safe.

  • Be a role model.  Set a good example with your own alcohol use and response to underage drinking.  Talk with other parents to ensure they are modeling the same behavior.

Prom and Graduation Night Tips for Parents:

  • Review your child's plan with them for the evening and tell them to check in with you periodically.

  • Store alcohol, medications, marijuana, and tobacco products in a secure location where kids don't have access.

  • Know who is driving.  Encourage seatbelt use - the best accessory!

  • Do not rent hotel rooms for your child or allow them to stay overnight in one.

We look forward to these exciting spring events and want to ensure the safety of all of our students as they create these special memories.  Visit the Sherburne County SUP Coalition website for additional tips and resources on how to talk with your teens:  www.sherburnesupcoalition.org.

June “Future-Planning” Tasks by Grade

Here are some resources for any college-bound student asking "What should I be doing right now?"

9th-graders

10th-graders

  • Learning How to Learn + The Science of Well Being: These free Coursera courses will help you understand how your brain works and what you can do to optimize your productivity and happiness.

  • Explore colleges with 800+ lists: Curious about what colleges have to offer? Use this fun online, searchable database from CollegeXpress, which covers everything from academic environments to school spirit.

  • Social media cleanup: This is a good time to clean up your social media profiles. If you have any questionable photos or language, delete them now before you start your college search in earnest.

11th-graders

12th-graders

  • Study tips in college (from Harvard): You’ll soon be sitting in your first college class, so take the time to read up on some suggestions on time management, testing, and study skills.

  • Get familiar with college lingo: College brings a ton of new vocabulary, so keep this glossary handy while you navigate registration, housing, and student services.

  • The Shovel Study Planner: Get ready for college with this simple, low-cost app for building an effective study plan and developing strong study skills.

Resources to Help Our Kids Thrive from  The Child Mind Institute

  • Talking to Kids about Sex and Dating: We don’t expect kids to always make good decisions.  But when it comes to sex and dating, it’s important for parents to talk to kids about the physical and emotional consequences of sex, no matter how awkward it feels for both parties.

  • Dispelling ADHD Myths and Misunderstandings:  While ADHD is common, it’s often misunderstood.  For example, many parents are surprised to learn that, despite its name, attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder doesn’t always present as hyperactivity in kids.  And kids with ADHD don’t have a deficit of attention but rather a tough time direction their attention to things that don’t feel rewarding, like homework.

Safety and Internet Filtering at Home
ISD 728 Chromebooks will continue to have filtering to help protect students against harmful and inappropriate online material.

Despite the District’s attempt to filter and provide additional protections outside of school, parents/guardians still play an important role in supervising their child's internet access and usage. Parents are encouraged to discuss rules for appropriate internet usage, and reinforce lessons of digital citizenship and safety. Please review our technology responsible use guidelines and visit www.isd728.org/Digital-Health-Wellness to learn more about available parent resources.

  • Visit here for more information about what is filtered.
  • Visit GoGuardian Parent App for information on how parents and guardians can monitor their children's Chromebook browsing activity, and choose to block sites such as YouTube.
